Pray

for the peace of Jerusalem. Those who love you will prosper.

Psalm 122:6

Context

Psalm 122 [5.] For there are set thrones for judgment,

    the thrones of David’s house.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Those who love you will prosper.

Peace be within your walls,

    and prosperity within your palaces.

For my brothers’ and companions’ sakes,

I will now say, “Peace be within you.”

For the sake of the house of Yahweh our God,

    I will seek your good.

Meaning:

At first glance, it seems straightforward, urging believers to intercede for the well-being and tranquility of Jerusalem. However, to truly grasp its meaning, we need to delve into the historical and spiritual context surrounding this verse.

Jerusalem holds a central place in the Bible, both geographically and spiritually. It was the city chosen by God to house His dwelling place, the temple, and became the focal point of worship for the Israelites. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, Jerusalem is often associated with God's covenant, His faithfulness, and the promised Messiah.

Historical Significance: Jerusalem has been a city marred by strife and conflict throughout history. It has witnessed wars, invasions, and the shifting tides of political turmoil. Praying for its peace acknowledges the turbulent history of this sacred city and expresses a desire for God's intervention in bringing stability and harmony.

Symbol of Unity: In the context of the psalm, Jerusalem is not just a physical city; it symbolizes the unity of God's people. The psalmist expresses joy and anticipation at the prospect of going to the house of the Lord, a place where believers gather in unity to worship. Praying for the peace of Jerusalem, therefore, extends beyond mere geopolitical concerns to encompass the spiritual unity of God's people.

God's Chosen Dwelling Place: Jerusalem holds a unique status as the city chosen by God. In 1 Kings 11:13, God declares His love for Jerusalem and the dwelling place of His name. Praying for the peace of Jerusalem is an acknowledgment of God's special connection with this city and a plea for His divine presence to bring tranquility.

The promise that "those who love you will prosper" introduces a reciprocal dynamic. Those who genuinely care for the well-being of Jerusalem, with its spiritual and historical significance, will themselves experience prosperity. This prosperity extends beyond material wealth; it encompasses the spiritual blessings that come from aligning one's heart with God's purposes.

By praying for the peace of Jerusalem, believers participate in a broader spiritual narrative. It is not just about the welfare of a city but aligning our hearts with God's redemptive plan. As we intercede for Jerusalem, we express our commitment to God's covenant promises, His faithfulness to His people, and the ultimate fulfillment of His purposes in Christ.

In the New Testament, we find echoes of this theme in Jesus' lament over Jerusalem (Luke 13:34-35). He expresses a deep desire to gather the people of Jerusalem, symbolizing all of humanity, under His wings, highlighting the spiritual significance of the city.

In conclusion, Psalm 122:6 is a call to prayer that transcends the boundaries of time and geography. It invites us to intercede for the peace of Jerusalem, recognizing its historical, spiritual, and symbolic importance. In doing so, we align ourselves with God's redemptive plan, expressing a desire for unity, acknowledging His chosen dwelling place, and participating in the broader narrative of His kingdom.
