Immediately
Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
Mark 5:30
Mark 5 [24.] He went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides. A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse, having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes. For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
Mark 5 [30.] Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
Mark 5 [31.] His disciples said to him, “You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
Meaning:
The woman who had suffered for twelve years had touched Jesus’ clothes and been healed at once (Mark 5:29). She hoped to slip away unnoticed. But Mark 5:30 tells us that Jesus noticed. Perceiving that power had gone out from him, he stopped, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” This single verse reveals the awareness, the power and the personal care of Jesus.
- “Perceiving in Himself”
Jesus was not unaware of what had happened. Mark uses similar language when Jesus knew what the scribes were thinking: “Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves” (Mark 2:8). In the woman’s case he perceived that healing power had flowed from him. Luke records his words: “Someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone out of me” (Luke 8:46).
This was not a mechanical or magical event in which power leaked from his clothing. The power was his, and it was given in response to faith. Peter later described Jesus as the one whom “God anointed ... with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing” (Acts 10:38).
- Turning Around in the Crowd
In a Middle Eastern crowd, people pressed close, and many hands would have brushed against a famous teacher. Jesus was on an urgent errand to the home of a dying girl (Mark 5:23), and every minute mattered to Jairus. Yet Jesus stopped. In a culture that valued honour, being touched by a woman considered unclean (Leviticus 15:25) could have been embarrassing for a rabbi. Jesus did not hide it; he drew attention to it.
- Why Ask the Question?
Jesus, fully human, often asked questions, and in his humanity he may not have chosen to know at once who had touched him. But his question was also an invitation. The psalmist prayed, “Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me” (Psalm 139:1), and Jesus knew all he needed to know. He asked so that the woman would come forward, receive his word of peace, and be publicly restored (Mark 5:34). A hidden healing would have left her still in the shadows; Jesus wanted her fully welcomed.
The Significance of Mark 5:30
- Jesus Knows the Touch of Faith
Many people were close to Jesus that day, but only one touched him in faith. Jesus distinguishes between nearness and trust. He says, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own” (John 10:14). No act of faith, however small or hidden, goes unnoticed by him.
- Jesus Is Never Too Busy for One Person
Jesus had a crowd around him and an urgent need ahead of him, yet he stopped for one woman. Our Lord is not too busy for us, and he calls his followers to imitate his attentiveness. In the press of life, he teaches us to notice the person who has reached out and to give them time, dignity and care.
Cross-References:
Luke 8:46: "But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone out of me.”" Luke records Jesus’ own explanation.
Acts 10:38: "even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him." The power that went out was the power of the Spirit upon Jesus.
Psalm 139:1: "Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me." God knows each person completely.
John 10:14: "I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own;" Jesus knows each of his sheep personally.
Conclusion: Mark 5:30 shows Jesus stopping in a crowd because one person had reached out to him in faith. He felt the power go out and turned to find her. This is the Saviour we trust: powerful enough to heal instantly, aware of every touch of faith, and caring enough to seek out the one who needs not only healing but welcome.
