Joshua 9:3-6 meaning...

This passage takes us to a pivotal moment in the conquest of Canaan, where the people of Gibeon employ cunning tactics in an attempt to preserve their lives.

  • A Strategic Deception

The background to this story is crucial. Joshua, under divine guidance, had led the Israelites to conquer Jericho and Ai. News of these victories had spread, creating a sense of fear among the inhabitants of the land. Recognizing the imminent threat, the people of Gibeon devise a plan to deceive the Israelites.

  • Theatrics of Deception

The Gibeonites resort to a ruse, disguising themselves as ambassadors from a distant land. They adorn themselves with old and worn-out clothing, carry dry and moldy provisions, and present a facade of weariness as if they had traveled a great distance. The theatricality of their deception is apparent—crafted to convince Joshua and the leaders of Israel that they are from a far-off region and not a local threat.

  • Significance of the Deception

The Gibeonites' deceptive strategy reflects the fear and desperation that had gripped the inhabitants of Canaan. The Israelites' military successes had instilled terror, prompting unconventional measures for survival.

  • Faithfulness to God's Word:

The incident also highlights the challenge of discernment for the Israelites. They were instructed by God not to make treaties with the inhabitants of the land (Exodus 34:12). The Gibeonites' cunning plan tests the Israelites' commitment to obeying God's commands.

  • Lesson on Discernment:

There's a lesson here for us about the importance of discernment in our spiritual journey. Not everything that presents itself as harmless or well-intentioned is truly so. It requires a discerning heart to navigate through deceptive schemes.

  • Discernment in Decision-Making:

The Gibeonite deception serves as a reminder for us to seek God's guidance and discernment in decision-making. Not everything that appears on the surface is as it seems, and prayerful consideration is essential.

  • Faithfulness to God's Commands:

Despite the clever tactics employed by the Gibeonites, the Israelites faltered in adhering to God's command about making treaties. It underscores the importance of unwavering obedience to God's Word even when faced with challenging circumstances.

  • Awareness of Spiritual Warfare:

The Gibeonite deception is a metaphor for the spiritual battles we encounter. It emphasizes the need for spiritual discernment and the armor of God to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.

In conclusion, Joshua 9:3-6 presents a strategic deception orchestrated by the Gibeonites in their quest for survival. It's a narrative that prompts reflection on discernment, faithfulness to God's commands, and the awareness of spiritual warfare. Joshua 9:3-6. When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wine skins, and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”
